Political shockwaves are still in effect after President Joe Biden's announcement that he will not be seeking re-election and endorsement of his Vice President Kamala Harris.
Former Democratic U.S. Congresswoman Kendra Horn, who is a political consultant, spoke with New 9 at 9 about what this means for the upcoming election.
Horn said she was surprised Biden decided to drop out and wishes the American people had more time to consider different candidates.
"I think he did it as a selfless act for the best interest of the country, but this is a conversation we should have been having a while ago, a year and a half ago before the primaries," Horn said.
She said she has seen a lot of support for Vice President Harris but thinks it is important to have an open process and consider what is best for the country.
"I think it's really important for the Vice President to make her case as to why she should be the nominee, and then we need to find out who would be the Vice Presidential nominee as well. There's a lot of questions," Horn said.
She said as far as the Vice President picks, having someone with executive-level experience is important.
"I think it's open, and I'll be very curious to see who it is, and perhaps name recognition goes a long way as well," Horn said.
As Harris hits the campaign trail, Horn said she and anyone else who may run have a lot of time to make up for.
"It's a massive undertaking. Name recognition helps, but I also think it's important for whoever the nominee is to be out there in front of the American people talking about the issues; I think that's the most important thing," Horn said.
Horn said she hopes this will lead to a broader conversation about civility and real issues in politics.
"I think that's what we really need right now is let's talk about the issues and what we're facing and let's come up with some solutions," Horn said.
Horn said she does not plan on returning to office any time soon.
"I like to never say never, but, you know, I don't have any plans," Horn said. "This has been an interesting year to watch what's happening and I'll be curious to see what happens over the next few weeks as we move forward."
