Pastor Louis Rogers went through some unthinkable challenges, but it was those times of challenge that are today helping kids all over the city.

“Living on the street, eating out of trashcans, sleeping on trees, sleeping up under bridges,” said Pastor Louis Rogers, of Miracle Temple Baptist Church.

His struggles stemmed from his addiction to drugs,

“Some gang members got a hold to me and doused me with five gallons of gasoline and set me on fire,” said Pastor Rogers.

He survived the attacks and was able to get off drugs. It was during a recent church service he shared his experiences.

“He was talking about how he didn’t have anything and how he struggled, and he needed something as simple as shoes,” said Felicia Young, Pastor Roger’s daughter.

That was a revelation moment for Young.

“Before I got to that door, I said Fefe you’re going to do a shoe drive,” said Young.

It was the moment she said God had been trying to show her.

“I’ve walked in my office several times with just my socks on from giving people the shoes off my feet,” said Young.

She is collecting new or slightly used shoes for kids as they start the school year.

“Cause kids are cruel nowadays, and they look at you from the bottom up,” said Young.

Shoes and donations will be collected for a big first come first serve giveaway on August 10 at Miracle Temple Baptist Church 1917 N. Lottie.

There will also be bounce houses and free hotdogs and hotlinks.

“Get you a pair of shoes, no questions asked and there you go, be blessed,” said Young.

Pastor Rogers is overwhelmed to see his struggles turn into this.

“That made my heart glad Mike, I mean it truly lifted me up,” said pastor Rogers.

“I can’t save the world, but if I can put shoes on some children’s feet, I’m doing something right,” said Young.

The shoe giveaway is Saturday, August 10th starting at noon until the shoes are gone. To donate shoes or financial contributions visit their GoFundMe page https://gofund.me/9cf0893f
