A piece of sports history is up for grabs. For the first time ever, a gold medal from the iconic "Dream Team" is up for auction. Considered to be one of the greatest teams ever assembled in sports history, the 1992 US men's Olympic basketball team is credited for expanding the sports of basketball on a global scale. Now you could potentially own the medal that was placed around the neck of Clyde Drexler. A NBA champion and 10-time All-Star, "Clyde the Glide" was selected for the Hall-of-Fame in 2004. Drexler averaged over 20 points and 6 rebounds per game.
The games were held in Barcelona and for the first time in Olympic history, restrictions were lifted from the International Basketball Federation that had restricted current NBA players from participating in the games. The US put together a roster that ultimately would total 14 members that would be inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame and a spot for the team itself. The "Dream Team" went undefeated at 8-0, winning by an average of 44 points per game and beating Croatia 117-85 to secure the gold medal. Their success boosted global awareness of basketball and shaped players like Dirk Nowitzki, Tony Parker, and Pau Gasol. Last year, NBA deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum explained to USA Today, the impact of the 92 games. "“Just think back to the original Dream Team in 1992 and the number of international players that were in our league then, and today, 25% of our league being born outside the United States and having the impact that they're having."
The current bid through the auction house Goldin, sits at $350,000. You can see all the images and information on this specific auction one the Goldin website.
