A stolen car out of North Carolina ended up in a police pursuit in the Northwest part of Oklahoma City on July 31, when officers performed a tactical vehicle intervention.
The stolen Dodge Challenger, which belonged to Leslie Lewis, was totaled.
"This was going to be a car that I was going to pass down to my son," Lewis said. "There was nothing — nothing — left of that car."
Police arrested William Winburn on charges related to the pursuit. A woman from North Carolina was also inside the car. She was originally reported missing, but police later said that was not the case. The woman has not been charged with any crimes.
Lewis said she had been helping Winburn overcome challenges in his life before he ultimately took advantage of her and stole her car. Despite the setback, and now counting pennies, she said it has not deterred her from helping others.
"Don't be afraid to give because you'll lose," Lewis said. "Because anything you lose, and I believe this, anything that you lose will be given back to you, multiplied, for giving to others."
Lewis also credited Doug Boland, an employee at Arrow Wrecker Service who comforted her and stayed beyond his shift to help clean her car when she drove for 17 hours straight to Oklahoma City to see the damage in person.
