Catoosa and Inola will play each other in football for the first time since 1993 in our Tulsa Tech Game of the Week.
The Battle of the Ports will take place Friday night in Catoosa, where a new rivalry and trophy will be at stake. Sal Guerrero, the Catoosa coach, reached out to Coach Thomas at Inola, plus members of the community to help with establishing the game and the new trophy.
“I contacted the Port of Catoosa since we have the Port City Classic here in basketball,” said Guerrero. “Port City wrestling, and all this port city, port city, so let's get the port involved. They said absolutely, and they came will all these ideas of a traveling trophy, coin toss and different things like that.”
The top of the trophy is a steel barge created by Steel & Pipe Supply, a company located at Tulsa Ports. Inola Castings is also creating a special coin to be used in the coin toss for the game on Friday.
Inola's Brett Thomas believes this should have happened a long time ago.
“They are close, and also being an athletic director, we were going to Arkansas and Miami,” said Thomas. “Hey, we need to stay close; let's keep it close for the community and the competition, so it's going to be exciting.”
