A sense of anticipation hangs in the air in downtown Tulsa.
“You can just feel it, it's palpable," said Destiny Green.
As folks gear up for the Route 66 Marathon.
“It’s a big draw, everybody likes to come, we’re like the biggest party in Tulsa,” said Green, who is the race director.
Thousands of runners took to the streets, weaving through Tulsa’s neighborhoods, historic districts, and scenic riverfront.
Green says it's a race that draws people in and keeps them coming back.
“People come to Tulsa and they’re like ‘Oh my gosh, we can’t not come back,'" she said.
Among those who hit the pavement are Angie Meyers and Colby Fugit, who came down from Wichita, Kansas.
“We had a little bit of a girls trip this weekend and then closing out with the race today,” said Meyers.
This is her first time in Tulsa and her first half marathon.
“Excited to run and then also sightsee,” she said.
The race promises something for everyone from seasoned marathoners to first-timers.
“We’re the only race in the country that does 'My First Marathon' medals and “My First Half Marathon” so that's a big draw too,” said Green.
For many, the marathon is not about crossing the finish line or getting a medal but the journey itself.
“I feel excited, we didn’t really set like a goal time, so we’re just trying to have fun and do our best,” said Fugit.
