STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- Stillwater business leaders are hoping residents will skip the Tulsa and Oklahoma City malls and stay on Main Street for holiday shopping this season.
Josh McKim is the Executive Director of Economic Development with Stillwater's Chamber of Commerce. He says that the city's location between Oklahoma City and Tulsa is both a blessing and a curse.
"All the amenities that both cities have we have easy access to," McKim said. "With that though, we also lose shopping dollars to those communities."
City leaders hit upon the idea to entice shoppers to stay in Stillwater with the Jingle Bell Sweepstakes. The contest grand prize is $10,000 worth of Christmas cash. Similar campaigns have been successful in other Oklahoma towns like Sapulpa.
"Ten thousand dollars seemed like a large enough number to get a lot of people's attention," McKim said. "But also something we could probably attain."
Participating merchants are giving out tickets with every purchase. Those tickets make the shopper eligible for the $10,000 drawing on December 12. There are also four $1,000 drawings the same day. Stillwater's local TV31 will broadcast a $2,000 drawing the following week.
It's left up to the merchants as to how they dole out the tickets. Some are giving out one ticket for every $10 purchase.
Kent Kinzie though, sells items at his jewelry store that are a little more big-ticket. He's giving away one ticket per $20 purchase.
"This is a great opportunity and we're really excited to make it happen," said Kinzie. "It's not every day you can give away $10,000."
The Stillwater Jingle Bell Sweepstakes runs through Dec. 11. The grand prize drawing will be Dec. 12. For more information, visit www.stillwaterchamber.org.
