Oklahoma's Open Carry Law Goes Into Effect On Thursday

On Thursday, November 1, gun owners with a permit are allowed to openly carry their firearms. But the new law comes with some exceptions.

Governor Mary Fallin signed into law Senate Bill 1733 on Tuesday, May 15. The new law permits those who are licensed, or already have been licensed, to either conceal or openly carry a firearm under the Oklahoma Self Defense Act.

The gun must be a pistol of .45 caliber or less and no more than 16 inches in length. It should also be carried in a belt or shoulder holster or a case specifically designed to hold a gun.

The law also allows property owners to openly carry a firearm on their property without a concealed carry permit for the purpose of self-defense.

However, there are several places where you will not be allowed to carry a firearm. The law prohibits carrying firearms on properties owned or leased by the city, state or federal government, at corrections facilities, in schools or college campuses, bars, liquor stores, places that host pari-mutuel wagering such as a horse racing tracks and at sports arenas during sporting events.

You can however carry your gun onto an area designated as parking, even if it is illegal to carry a gun into the business or establishment.

Businesses and property owners have the option to decide for themselves whether or not to allow handguns.

Violators of the law face state fines and/or imprisonment, and loss of their permit to carry.
