Court Of Appeals To Determine If Garfield Co. Sheriff Will Stand Trial For Inmate's Death

The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals has been asked to decide whether a sheriff will go to trial over the death of an inmate in 2016.

The court of appeals is taking a look into Garfield County Sheriff Jerry Niles. 

The appeal pertains to the death of an inmate named Anthony Huff. Huff died after spending more than two days in a restraint chair back in 2016. 

Niles pleaded not guilty to first-degree manslaughter. But now, multiple sources report that a special prosecutor asked the court this week to decide on a trial for Niles. 

The request comes after last month when a judge sent three others to trial over the inmate's death. But the judge dismissed the case against Niles, citing insufficient evidence.

After that, another judge upheld that decision.

An autopsy listed Huff's probable cause of death as chronic alcoholism. He was arrested for public intoxication.

Right now Niles is on paid suspension.
