A suspect is dead after an officer-involved shooting at an Oklahoma City Sonic. The restaurant was evacuated after the suspect, believed to be armed, refused to get out of a vehicle Tuesday.
Police described the suspect as a black male in his 60s.
Around 3:30 p.m., officers were called to home near NW 18th and Kelham Avenue after 60-year-old Elray Barber left his family’s home intoxicated and carrying a gun. He left the home in a maroon vehicle.
Minutes later, officers attempted to pull the vehicle over as Barber was turning into the Sonic restaurant at 2217 N. Martin Luther King Boulevard.
Police said Barber was in a parked car with a 55-year-old woman, who has not been identified, and refused to get out of the vehicle. As a precaution, Sonic was evacuated.
Negotiations lasted approximately two hours. Throughout that time, police said the Barber made several threats against the woman in his car and officers.
“They could not get any cooperation from the subject,” said Capt. Larry Withrow of the Oklahoma City Police Department. “He would not follow instructions and he would not step out of the vehicle. The female stated the male subject had pointed a gun at her and would not let her exit the vehicle.”
It’s unclear how the man in the vehicle knew the female passenger.
Around 5:40 p.m., two officers fired shots, killing Barber.
The woman inside the vehicle was shot in the side of her body by Barber. It is unclear at this time whether officers or the man fired the first rounds.
The woman was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The officers involved have been identified as 10-year veteran Sergeant Clint Music and Officer Kevin Kuhlman. Both have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation is underway.
