Del City police continue to investigate after a man died and two officers were injured during a shooting Saturday night at Walmart.

Officers say in the evening, a security guard took suspect, Gabriel Carter, into an office within the store, for allegedly shoplifting.

A Del City Police officer was also called in.

“While en route to the call, the Del City officer was advised that the male subject had a felony warrant for his arrest out of Oklahoma County,” Del City police Capt. Bradley Rule said.

Carter had a lengthy criminal history before the incident, and police said he also had a handgun.

When the Del City officer arrived and tried to arrest him, investigators said Carter resisted.

“During the struggle, the suspect produced a small semi-automatic pistol and fired shots at the officers,” Rule said.

The shots injured both the Del City officer and security officer/off-duty Amber police officer Marvin Asche.

Police say the Del City officer then shot at Carter.

“We can confirm he was shot in the back twice. The room this occurred in is very small. He was still actively in possession of his firearm. He had fired the shot and within a millisecond, our officer fired,” Rule said.

Carter died at the Walmart from the gunshot wounds. The two officers were injured but are recovering.

Asche remains in the hospital, and the Del City officer is now at home, according to police.

“Something so simple as shoplifting turned into a deadly encounter for our officers,” Rule said.

Del City police will continue to investigate and turn their findings over to the district attorney.

Walmart spokesperson Anne Hatfield released the following statement:

“We are saddened by the tragic incident. We’re thankful for the actions of the Del City Police Department, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the two officers injured. We are working closely with law enforcement. Since this is an active investigation, we will refer additional questions to them.”
