December 14-16 has been set aside as the official debut weekend for Oklahoma City's downtown streetcar system.
Installation is expected to be complete for the multi-million dollar project on Friday, officials tell News 9. Oklahoma City residents funded the project through the MAPS-3 sales tax initiative.
The debut event will take place at Leadership Square and will kick off the inaugural ride of the OKC Streetcar.
It's a big weekend for several reasons, the OKC Thunder are scheduled to play the LA Clippers at home Saturday, December 15. The game will draw the expected large crowds downtown and help test the effectiveness of the streetcar system.
More than 50,000 riders are expected to utilize the streetcars opening weekend.
7 streetcars will operate on the complete system, each of them holding about 100 people.
The system consists of a Bricktown and Downtown loop.
Riders will eventually pay a base fare of $1 for a one-hour pass on the streetcars.
