Oklahoma City’s School District is moving away from the school calendar it’s operated under since 2011.

“The Continuous Learning Calendar” cut the length of the Summer to two months.

New Oklahoma City Superintendent Dr. Sean McDaniel says the continuous calendar led to too many students missing class.

“Restoring a three-month long Summer will cut down on absences.  “If we can get kids in class, we know what the research says about attendance,” McDaniel said. “The higher the attendance rate, the better kids are going to do in the long-term.”

Board Vice President Gloria Torres says she supported the continuous learning model when it began seven years ago.

“…The results had not shown as we hoped, as we expected with the previous calendar,” Torres said.  “So we can’t continue with that model.”
