Storms that produced a brief tornado in western Oklahoma on Wednesday intensified as they approached the Oklahoma City metro area, producing multiple possible tornadoes, causing some slight damage and leaving behind flash flooding after heavy rains.
Strong-to-severe storms moved through the Oklahoma City metro area Wednesday night with the strongest of them emerging on the south side of the city. A tornado warning was issued in the 8 p.m. hour for Grady, Cleveland and McClain counties after a tornado was spotted near the town of Amber.
StormTrackers Val and Amy Castor were on the scene, on the story in Grady County when power flashes were spotted near Amber. That storm was near Highway 81 and moved to the east-northeast before it weakened, making room for a new spin-up near the town of Alex later in the hour.
Some damage was reported in Amber, including at a home along County Street 2880.
A few residents in Purcell are dealing with roof and tree damage Tuesday night after storms moved across town. The emergency manager for Purcell asked people to stay away from an area west of Green Avenue from Washington to Van Buren.
At several points from 8:30 onward, storms tried to spin up funnels and produce tornadoes, but nothing resulted in much beyond a few minutes worth of circulation. However, the day was quite active starting mid-afternoon. Storms in western Oklahoma and especially southwestern Oklahoma produced funnels and tornadoes earlier in the day, including a spin-up near the town of Lone Wolf at about 4:40 p.m.
A second round of storms is expected overnight and could impact the Oklahoma City metro area right around 5 a.m. Tune in to News 9 In The Morning from 4 to 7 a.m. for complete coverage with meteorologist Jed Castles.
