One Dead After Officer-Involved Shooting In SW OKC

One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting was reported overnight in southwest Oklahoma City.

The shooting happened about 2:40 a.m. Wednesday at a duplex in the 1400 block of SW 20. 

Police were called to the area in reference to a suicidal person. When officers arrived, they found a man on the front lawn of a duplex, dousing himself with lighter fluid and holding a lighter, police said.

The officers gave verbal commands to put down the lighter fluid and the lighter but the man did not drop the objects, police said.

One officer, officer Troy Nitzky, a two-year veteran of the department, deployed a bean bag gun while another officer, Sgt. Keith Sweeney, a nine-year veteran of the department, fired his weapon at the man.

The man, who was identified as 29-year-old Dustin Robert Pigeon, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

This is the seventh officer-involved shooting and the 77th homicide in 2017 in Oklahoma City.
