Moore Caretaker Accused Of Exploiting Man With Disabilities

According to a warrant request filed in Cleveland County District Court Tuesday, a Moore woman told police it was her addiction to drugs that led her to steal thousands of dollars from a man with disabilities.

Moore Police detectives said it came to light when a secondary caregiver took the victim to buy groceries and the card was denied.

Sue Oldham and the victim have lived across the street from each other for decades. “He was always doing something. He was a really good neighbor. He’s help anybody do anything,” she said.

Both of their homes were rebuilt after they were destroyed in the Moore tornado, she told News 9.

And now, her longtime neighbor has gone through another hardship. “It’s just a mess for him,” Oldham explained.

Police said the victim has suffered multiple strokes and is unable to talk, walk or care for his basic needs. And in May of this year, 25-year-old Rachel Walker was acting as his live-in caregiver, according to police.

She reportedly used the man's debit card without his permission to withdraw cash 71 times, according to the filing.

“He never gave anybody his debit card or his number. And then all of a sudden they tell me that this has happened, and I thought, ‘well, how?” Oldham said.

The total loss to the victim's bank because of the unauthorized charges totals $24,315, according to an affidavit.

Now, Sue is serving as the victim's power of attorney, since she says he has no family in the area. She said she is doing all she can to help him, since he cannot help himself.

“He was an easy target and that’s really unfortunate. As a society, I think we need to watch our neighbors maybe a little closer to see what we can do to help keep things like this from happening,” Oldham said.

Court records show Walker faces one felony count of exploitation of an elderly person or disabled adult.
