Looking Back At Last Year's Bedlam Matchup

While this Saturday's Bedlam matchup brings with it a lot of hype and excitement seeing there's a Big 12 Championship on the line, let's not forget that last year's battle between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State had similar stakes.

Oklahoma went to Stillwater and came out on top 58-23 and made a statement to the committee that the Sooners belonged in the playoff. Here's a look back at what else happened on that frigid November night: 

Mason Rudolph was limited: While OU entered the game led by Baker Mayfield, the Cowboys didn't have the luxury of having a healthy Rudolph under center. Backup J.W. Walsh had to step in for OSU, but the Sooners held him to 25-for-45 passing and two touchdowns to go with an interception. While the numbers weren't terrible, the Pokes struggled to resemble the offense that led them to a 10-1 record entering the game. Rudolph did attempt three passes in the game, one of which was picked off by Jordan Thomas and returned for a touchdown. 

Mayfield was on point: While he was deep in the conversation for the Heisman trophy at the time, Mayfield came into Bedlam and managed the game to perfection by throwing for 180 yards and two scores while adding 77 rushing yards and another touchdown. Not only did he carefully orchestrate scoring drives, but he protected the ball all night and never threw an interception.

OU dominated on the ground: While Mayfield was efficient all night, it was the OU running game that did most of the heavy lifting. Joe Mixon turned his 14 carries into 136 yards and two scores, while Samaje Perine added 131 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The offensive line did a tremendous job blocking up front, but it was the Sooners' two stud backs that carried the team to victory. 

Remember Sterling Shepard?: Now with the New York Giants, Shepard was a beast for OU in last year's OSU matchup and finished with 10 catches for 87 yards and a touchdown. No other OU receiver totaled more than two receptions in the game and current Biletnikoff finalist, Dede Westbrook, was held to only one catch for 26 yards. 

James Washington had a big day: Even though he was without his starting quarterback, Washington was dominant against the Sooners, racking up 169 yards and a touchdown while making one dazzling play after another. The Cowboys struggled to do much in the loss, but it definitely wasn't Washington's fault.

OSU defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer after the game: "Everybody that's played them has probably had their highest missed tackle total out of everybody they played. Between the two running backs and Mayfield, they're good players. I'm disappointed. I hoped we would've tackled better, but it was evident that they're strong, and they broke tackles."
