A human skull and other body parts were found in a wooded area Tuesday near SE 15 and Harrah Road in eastern Oklahoma County, according to Sheriff John Whetsel.
The sheriff’s office called out for reserve deputies to come assist with the search of the property. A couple dozen deputies, mounted patrol and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol helicopter responded to the area to search for more remains after the hunter’s discovery.
“This is a crime scene. It’s also an area that’s covered with leaves and limbs and other debris, so we want to make sure that we don’t miss evidence,” the sheriff said.
“'It' is in fact a human skull. It does have teeth,” he explained. “We think at this point we’re going to be able to get DNA which will be very helpful.”
The initial estimate is the body parts have been there for one to two years, Whetsel told News 9.
“We are checking missing person reports that have been filed in this area. That will give us at least a starting point to begin making some DNA comparisons,” he added.
Angela Baker lives across the street from where the search took place. She was concerned to hear about what was found.
“That’s kind of scary,” she said Tuesday evening.
At this point, investigators said it's too early to know the circumstances surrounding this person's death, but Whetsel said he thinks it is an adult.
Search crews will be back at the scene first thing Wednesday morning.
