Tuesday News 9 unveiled NextGen Live - the most technologically advanced dual pol radar in the world. We're the first television station in Oklahoma to use it and will be a game changer when it comes to tracking weather.
"The technology for dual pol has advanced pretty substantially over the last six or eight years," said John Ellis, Baron Program Manager.
Now, News 9 has the latest out there. Our NextGen Live radar is the most advanced in the world. Engineers at Baron Services in Huntsville, Alabama designed it.
"With the new baron gen technology, you'll be second to none with any competitors in your market," said Ellis.
All other television radars in Oklahoma use older technology called a single pole radar that was discovered during the 1950s. Our radar transmits two beams into the atmosphere simultaneously, one horizontally and one vertically, allowing us see into the storms like no other radar in the state.
"With dual polarization, you can see the shapes of the raindrops and that tells us different things about different storms, different seasons, so in winter you will be able to use it to detect better what is rain, what is sleet, what is snow, to help the viewers avoid those areas that might be icy," said Steve Bray, Baron Meteorologist.
These brand new tools will help us keep you safe and ahead of the storm, every day.
