Oklahomans have overwhelmingly voted down a measure known as the "Right to Farm."

State Question 777 which would give rights and added protections to farmers and ranchers in the state. Rights added by SQ 777 include the following:

  • The right to make use of agriculture technology
  • The right to make use of livestock procedures
  • The right to make use of ranching practices

The language in SQ 777 has some wondering if the measure gives too much legal protection.

Opponents say, if passed it would be nearly impossible to put new regulations on anything agricultural -- whether it's a puppy mill or agricultural runoff impacting water quality.

Pro 777 forces say opponents are exaggerating its legal impact. They say it will not affect federal law in any way, and say local lawmakers will still be able to approve new regulations.

Oklahoma Farm Bureau President Tom Buchanan released the following statement after the defeat was announced:

On behalf of the more than 26,000 family farmers and ranchers, Oklahoma Farm Bureau wants to thank the thousands of Oklahomans who voted for State Question 777, Oklahoma’s Right to Farm. Family farmers and ranchers of Oklahoma work hard to provide the safest, most affordable food this Nation has seen. Although we are disappointed in today’s vote, we will not waver in our commitment to ensuring our family farmers and ranchers can continue to operate without fear from outside interest groups and provide consumers with choice when they go to the grocery store. This has always been the charge of Oklahoma Farm Bureau and we will continue in this endeavor.
