This week, the Moore Police Department is hosting a unique training for police officers around the world. World-renowned MMA fighter and UFC Hall of Famer, Royce Gracie, is in town to teach the art of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
It’s an additional option for police officers to defend themselves from aggressive or resistant suspects.
Royce Gracie said, “Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, you don’t have to be big. You don’t have to be strong. You don’t have to be fast. You have to know what you’re doing.”
Every year, Bethany Police Department’s Lieutenant Christopher Culbreath looks forward to training with Gracie.
“Gracie Jiu-Jitsu literally saved my life February of 2006. I was involved in an altercation with a man that was probably twice my size,” said Lt. Culbreath, who is 5’6” and 185 pounds. He said the incident was on the side of the highway. Culbreath was able to control and arrest the man without hurting him.
Moore Police Department puts on this training as an additional option to protect police officers and their residents.
“This week, I am not just teaching them how to do the moves, but I’m teaching them how to teach the moves so they can go back to their department and pass on,” said Gracie.
