It’s now official, Oklahomans will be voting on only one option when it comes to changing the liquor laws in our state. State Question 792 will be on the November's ballot.
Right now in Oklahoma the only place you can buy cold beer is in grocery and convenience stores, and it's only 3.2% alcohol. Liquor stores can sell strong beer, but not cold. Liquor stores are also the only place you can buy wine. State Question 792 would change all of that.
“You’ll still be able to get Budweiser, Miller and Coors, but they’ll be at the regular strength as they are sold at almost every other state in the country. And you’ll be able to sell wine products in grocery stores,” explained “Yes on 792” campaign spokesperson, Alex Weintz.
Weintz says the ballot measure would also open up the market for craft and other beers that are only sold cold and allow direct shipments of wine.
“We do think there will be better selection and better choice,” said Weintz
Liquor store owners, however, have been against the measure from the start, saying it would hurt their business and attempted to put an alternate measure on the ballot, SQ 791, that would have allowed strong beer to be sold cold in any liquor store, grocery store or convenience store beginning July 2017. Wine sales at grocery and convenience stores would be phased in over 10 years.
They didn't get the necessary signatures to put the question on that ballot in November. But supporters are still collecting signatures for question 791, what they are calling "Cold Beer Now" option.
They have through October to collect the signatures. So if 792 fails at the ballot box that would be another option for voters to consider in likely the 2018 elections.
