Dion Waiters has signed with the Miami Heat on a one-year $2.9 million deal. The 24-year-old guard had a $6.8 million option on the table to remain with the Thunder until a week ago, when OKC rescinded the offer.
Waiters averaged 9.8 points per game with the Thunder in 2015-16. He shot 39.9 percent from the field and 35.8 percent from three but totaled just eight points on 3-of-18 shooting in the Thunder’s final three Western Conference Finals games.
The Thunder’s trade to acquire Victor Oladipo and the signing of another shooting guard, Alex Abrines, likely sealed the exit of the mercurial Waiters. Still, the fact that he commanded just $2.9 million in the salary cap-flush market is surprising.
