A 16-month-old child has been hospitalized after falling into a swimming pool Saturday afternoon, Oklahoma City firefighters said.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the 10000 block of Thompson Avenue near SW 15 and Morgan Road after a child fell into a pool.

The boy was taken to Integris Baptist Medical Center and is in the intensive care unit.

The 16-month-old boy wandered away and fell in the water while his mother was taking a shower.

It's unclear how long he was underwater, but his family pulled him out of the pool as soon as they realized what happened.

“CPR was in progress from a family member,” Oklahoma City Fire Department Maj. Paul Nash said.

First responders were able to get a pulse and revive the toddler. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

News 9 was told the temperature of the cool water was a key factor in getting the little boy's heart beating again; a hopeful sign after such an unfortunate lapse of time.

“We’d just like to remind everyone especially when there is a body of water nearby to keep close contact of where your kids are,” Nash said. “Keeping your eyes on your kids at all times or having someone watch them at all times, because they get away quick.”

It is not known how long the child was underwater.
