One of OU’s biggest fans didn’t make it to Miami for Thursday afternoon’s game against Clemson, but still had his eye on the team he loves.
Calvin Steves, 52, is like royalty in Norman and may be OU's biggest fan.
Generations of OU students know Steves by the wagon full of Norman Transcript Newspapers he’s peddled around town for decades.
Back in 1979, Steves was riding his bike when he was nearly killed by a hit-and-run driver. It’s something that changed the course of his life forever. He still suffers physical scars, and takes medication to control seizures. Last December, he lost his 1981 Norman High School class ring. When Jostens Jewelers found out about it, they replaced Calvin’s class ring for free.
Thursday, Steves gathered with friends to watch his favorite team play at the Brookhaven Louie’s in Norman. “You know people love you around here don’t you,” I said. Steves responded, “Yes I do. Everybody loves me around this town. That’s not a bad thing at all. Yep,” he said.
