The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) released the latest updates on road conditions as a winter storm moves across the state.
As of 8 p.m. Monday, Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews report highway conditions are improving statewide but caution the potential for black ice developing and roadways refreezing remains high through the night.
Slick conditions could impact the morning commute and drivers are encouraged to plan ahead for extra time Tuesday morning to arrive at their destination. Several highways remain closed in eastern Oklahoma due to flooding and caution is advised in northeast Oklahoma where temperatures are expected to drop below freezing.
Roads in Woodward and Major counties in northwest Oklahoma are clear but remain wet with the potential to freeze overnight. Secondary highways in these two counties remain slick and hazardous and travel is discouraged. Conditions have improved on US-60 between Harmon and the Texas state line in Ellis County but the highway remains slick and hazardous in spots. Snow drifts remain a threat to safe travel in Roger Mills and Washita counties along SH-33, SH-47 and SH-55 east of Rocky.
I-35 is mostly clear and dry from Wynnewood to the Texas state line, however, the corridor remains slick in spots. I-40 also has significantly improved in western Oklahoma, but also has slick and hazardous spots underneath overpasses. Crews will continue monitoring corridor conditions for both interstates overnight.
Downed power lines due to heavy coats of ice remain a hazard to motorists across much of central Oklahoma and could cause more road closures overnight.
Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews are continuing salt and sand operations as needed, and drivers should be alert to black ice conditions and use caution on bridges and overpasses and all on- and off-ramps. Drivers should stay at least 200 feet behind snow plows. Use caution and slower speeds near ramps and low-lying areas where standing water has accumulated.
