Person Of Interest In Canton Killing Has Criminal Past

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is still asking for help finding a man they say may be the hitchhiker accused of killing Caylee Massey, 18, from Oklahoma City.

Massey died after being shot inside a pickup truck two to three miles east of Canton, according to investigators. The driver, described as an acquaintance of Massey, said they picked up a hitchhiker on their way north from Oklahoma City to Canton.

Then sometime around 4 a.m. the driver said the hitchhiker shot Massey before exiting the truck. The driver then drove to the Canton police department for help, but Massey would later die from her injury.

On Wednesday, OSBI issued a photo of 23-year-old Christopher Blake Scruggs from a gas station picture of him Wednesday from a Watonga gas station saying he is a person of interest in Massey's death.

“We want to talk to him to find out what he knows about this,” said OSBI Spokesperson Jessica Brown.

Brown did say investigators have suspicions Scruggs may be the alleged hitchhiker, but nothing was certain. But what authorities do know about Scruggs is his checkered past with the law.

According to records, Christopher Scruggs, also referred to as Blake Scruggs in some documents and on Facebook, has several burglary and drug possession convictions dating back to 2010.

He served two years in prison in 2011 after he pleaded guilty to shooting, stabbing, decapitating and then killing several domesticated deer on a farm in his hometown of Crescent. The crimes were felonies punishable by five years in prison, but Scruggs’ sentence was reduced to three years.

He is also wanted for a crime that happened just two weeks ago. According to a Logan County probable cause statement, witnesses told police Scruggs and another man were beating a man on the ground with a blunt, black object. The beating fractured the victim’s skull and left him with deep lacerations. Doctors say the victims injuries were so bad he could have died from blood loss if he had not gotten immediate medical attention.

“Anyone with a lengthy criminal history we would consider a violent individual,” Brown said.
