Big 12 Roundup

What a wild day of college football it was on Saturday, especially for those who cheer for Oklahoma State. The Cowboys were front in center during all of the madness that Saturday brought with their 30-27 win in Austin, while OU rested up during its only bye week of the season.

OSU starts off unbeaten in conference play, and now the Sooners plunge head first this Saturday when they host West Virginia.  The rest of the Big 12 conference was busy in action this weekend as well, so here’s a recap of what went down.

TCU (4-0) survives scare from Texas Tech (3-1)

It was a wild ending in Lubbock, as the Horned Frogs snuck away with a 55-52 win after a dazzling tipped catch in the end zone by running back Aaron Green in the final seconds.

This game screamed upset throughout, but the TCU offense was able to keep the Horned Frogs in the game despite a poor defensive performance. Tech totaled 607 yards on offense, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes picked apart the Horned Frogs’ pass defense throughout the entire game.

Hesiman candidate Trevone Boykin had a monster game for TCU, totaling 485 yards through the air and four touchdowns to go with his 49 yards rushing.

A win’s a win, but TCU dropped one spot in the AP poll from No. 3 to 4, while Tech proved its win a week earlier against Arkansas wasn’t a fluke.

TCU hosts Texas this week while Tech plays Baylor at At&T stadium in Arlington.

Baylor (4-0) Rolls Past Rice (2-2)

The fifth ranked Bears looked the part as they easily took down Rice in Waco with a score of 70-17.

Quarterback Seth Russell tied a school record with six touchdown passes to go with his 277 yards passing, and the junior didn’t even play the entire game. Russell’s No. 1 target, Corey Coleman added 100 yards receiving while also hauling in three touchdown passes.

I doubt there were many that believed Baylor would lose to Rice, but it was assuring to see they weren’t rusty coming off a bye week.

West Virginia (3-0) breezes by Maryland (2-2)

A lot of OU fans had their eyes on this blowout since the Mountaineers are the next test for the Sooners. West Virginia appears to be primed and ready for that matchup, and on Saturday they got it done on the ground and through the air as they dropped the Terrapins 45-6.

Quarterback Skyler Howard threw for 294 yards and four touchdowns while Wendell Smallwood impressed on the ground with 147 yards.

The West Virginia offense wasn’t the only thing in sync in its win. The defense only allowed six points, which happened to come in the fourth quarter when the game was already out of hand. Through three games the Mountaineers have only allowed 23 points.

Kansas (0-3) extends losing streak with loss to Rutgers

In a game it appeared the Jayhawks were capable of winning, KU was unable to get the job done as they lost its sixth straight game dating back to last season.

KU only mustered up 64 yards on the ground, and was constantly hurt by penalties throughout the game. The only bright spot for the Jayhawks were the two rushing touchdowns by Ke’aun Kinner, but overall the running back had an average game, averaging only 1.5 yards per carry.

No one expected much out of Kansas this season, but this start is horrid. They will need to rebuild their program from the ground up.

Kansas travels to Iowa State this week.
