Here are some notable events that occurred on this day throughout history.
1787 – The Constitution of the United States is signed by 38 of 41 delegates at the end of Philadelphia’s constitutional convention. The document needed 9 of the 13 colonies’ support to be ratified.
1862 – The “bloodiest day in American History” when Union and Confederate troops engaged at Maryland’s Antietam Creek. The Battle of Antietam, which only lasted a day, ended in a stalemate with combined losses reaching nearly 23,000 soldiers.
1916 – Manfred von Richtofen, best known as “The Red Baron”, shoots down his first plane during WWI. The Red Baron defected from Germany and joined the Imperial Air Service in 1915.
1947 – Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play Major League Baseball, wins Rookie of the Year.
1976 – NASA unveils the first ever space shuttle, The Enterprise. (NASA)
1983 – Vanessa Williams, 20, becomes the first African American to win the title of Miss America.
2011 – The “Occupy Wall Street” movement begins in New York City’s Zuccotti Park. The movement was meant to call attention to social and economic inequalities acorss the world.
