Oklahoma City police arrested a man accused of poisoning a woman by putting mercury in her cup.
According to police, on July 22, officers responded to a suspicious activity report at a home on S.W. 148th Street. A woman told officers she found a large amount of mercury in her drinking cup.
The victim said she uses the same cup all the time to drink water, and that she believes 45-year-old Robert Larry Buchert Jr. was the one who put the mercury in her cup.
The woman said within the past year, she has given Buchert about $2,000 and recently told him she wouldn’t give him any more money. She said last week, Buchert came to her house three times and asked her several times to give him a loan.
According to the police report, after Buchert visited her, the victim began to feel dizzy, nauseous, confused and she had a headache. She believes she had ingested some of the mercury. The victim also told police that Buchert lived at her home back in 2012, and that she found a jar containing mercury in her room.
The victim told police during recent visits, Buchert seemed to take more interest in her health. She said Buchert would have had easy access to her drinking cup.
On Friday, September 4, Buchert was booked into the Oklahoma County Jail on multiple complaints, including attempt to kill by poison. He’s being held on $20,000 bond.
