Richard Glossip's Daughters Fighting To Stop His Execution

A petition to get a 60-day stay on an Oklahoma death row inmate's execution is now on the Governor's desk.

More than 270,000 signatures were gathered for Richard Glossip, but so far that has not swayed the Governor's opinion.

Glossip is scheduled to be executed on September 16^. But, anti-death penalty advocates hand-delivered a petition to Governor Mary Fallin’s office on Thursday.

Well-known death penalty opponent Sister Helen Prejean led the way, carrying a petition with more than 270,000 signatures to Governor Mary Fallin's office.

The petition asks the Governor to grant a 60-day stay on Richard Glossip's execution.

"Governors have been given additional powers exactly for cases like this, where there is a preponderance of residual doubt,” said Sister Prejean, Glossip’s spiritual advisor.

Glossip was sentenced to death for his role in the 1997 beating death of Barry Van Treese.

He maintains his innocence.

“My dad is really an innocent man and didn't have anything to do with this,” said Glossip’s daughter, Ericka Glossip-Hodge.

Glossip’s daughters came from Maryland to Oklahoma to fight for their dad.

“He hopes his execution can bring light on someone else who is innocent and maybe he can end up saving a life and that way his death won't be in vain,” said Christina Glossip-Hodge.

New attorneys on Glossip's case said they want more time to fight for evidence to be heard that was suppressed in his original trials.

“If something like this can happen to him, something like this can happen to someone else,” Christina Glossip-Hodge told News 9.

The Governor's office said Governor Fallin does not think a stay is appropriate in this case.

“Governor Fallin has no reason to second-guess again, either the jurors or the courts, and so the execution will go forward,” said spokesperson Alex Weintz.

Glossip's family said Governor Fallin still has time to reconsider.

“They're killing a man solely off of a murderer's testimony,” Christina Glossip-Hodge added.
