1718 – French colonists in Louisiana found a colony on the Gulf of Mexico and name if after the Duke Philippe d’Orleans, which would eventually become the city of New Orleans.
1835 – The New York Sun newspaper published a series of successful articles about the “discovery” of life on the Moon. The “Great Moon Hoax” made The Sun the largest circulating paper on the planet at the time.
1875 – Matthew Webb, 27, becomes first person to successfully swim across the English Channel.
1930 – Sean Connery is born in Edinburgh, Scotland.
1944 – Paris is liberated from Nazi control.
1975 – Bruce Springsteen releases one of his most successful albums, Born To Run.
1984 – Famous American author Truman Capote dies in Los Angeles. He was 59.
