1590 – In one of the great mysteries in early colonial history, the colony on Roanoke Island was found completely deserted. The colonists were never found and there was no sign of violence.
1872 – The first-ever mail-order catalog was issued by Aaron Montgomery Ward.
1896 – Arthur Ochs purchases and revives New York Times newspaper. Turns it into America’s leading newspaper.
1920 – The 19th amendment is ratified, giving women the right to vote.
1936 – World-class actor and director Robert Redford is born in Santa Monica, California. (AP)
