Fight To Save Glossip Continues As Actress Takes Aim At Governor

Susan Sarandon won an Oscar for portraying Sister Helen Prejean in the movie Dead Man Walking.

Now, the actress has joined Prejean in the real life fight to save Richard Glossip, who's set to be executed Sept. 16.

“This case is so typical,” Sarandon said in the interview with Sky News. “Bad representation; two trials that were ridiculous; no physical evidence. He was put there by a snitch that actually did kill the person.”

Sarandon went on to call out Gov. Mary Fallin for not stepping in to stop the execution.

“The Governor of Oklahoma is just a horrible person and a woman, so it’s even more discouraging in terms of digging in and not wanting to get any more information,” Sarandon said.

The Governor's director of communications Alex Weintz responded to Sarandon in a series of tweets saying “The Gov does not have the ability to grant clemency to Glossip,” and in addition two juries convicted Glossip and multiple appeals courts upheld that sentence.

Monday morning, both Sarandon and Prejean fired back.

"He's wrong on several points," Sarandon said.

"The same 150+ death row exonerates also had sentences upheld by many courts. They were innocent. Courts make mistakes. The Gov. should grant a reprieve so Glossip can present evidence of innocence. Executing an innocent man can never be reversed," Sarandon said in several tweets.

“I’m hoping some king of exposure will get his sentence at least commuted because he’s clearly innocent,” Sarandon told Sky News.

Fallin issued a statement Monday on Glossip in which she said the legal process has run its course. 

"His actions directly led to the brutal murder of a husband and a father of seven children. The state of Oklahoma is prepared to hold him accountable for his crimes and move forward with his scheduled execution," she said.
