OKC Police: Man Broke Into Apartment Where Girl, 12, Was Home Alone

An Oklahoma City man was arrested after police said he broke into his neighbor's apartment where a 12-year-old girl was home alone.

According to police, at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, August 1, officers responded to the report of a burglary in progress at an apartment in 6000 block of N.W. 10th Street. A woman told police her 12-year-old daughter was home alone, and that someone was breaking into the apartment.

Officers arrived at the scene and found the suspect, 20-year-old Jonathan Estrada, about 40 yards south of the apartment he had broken into.

The mother said she and her husband went to the store and left their 12-year-old daughter home alone. When they were walking to their vehicle, they even saw Estrada, who is a neighbor, and he said "hi" to them. However, shortly after, the mother said she got a phone call from her daughter, saying that someone was banging on the front door.

The girl told her mother she went to the hallway and saw that the front door was open, and that Estrada was standing in the living room. The girl said as soon as Estrada saw her, he ran out of the apartment. She said she recognized Estrada as the neighbor who lives in an apartment across from theirs.

According to police, the mother also called a relative who lives in the same complex. He immediately went to the victim’s apartment and saw the suspect walking away. Police said the relative told Estrada to sit on the curb until police arrive, and Estrada complied.

Officers said the front door to the apartment appeared to have been forced open. No one was injured.

Estrada was booked into the Oklahoma County Jail on a complaint of first-degree burglary.
