Jim Gardner and Bob Mills SkyNews 9 HD were above as flames shot out of several buildings Tuesday in the historic downtown district of Hinton in Caddo County.
The damage was widespread and the fire took hours to put out with the effort of multiple fire departments.
“The lights started flickering,” Maria Trevizo said.
However, the flames were already in full force.
“When we went and checked with a neighbor she had fire in the back of her building,” Trevizo said.
The fire swept from business to business and headed for town hall and the police department.
“We had an assembly line going and got all the stuff out of there,” Taylor Meriwether said.
The fire may have started in the back of an antique store before spreading to the dental office next door.
“Our patient broke their appointment today,” Trevizo said. “So, lucky for them, I guess.”
It was also luck for the woman inside the antique shop who realized the fire had started and beat the flames to each door down main street.
“A lady come in and said, ‘Call 911. There’s a fire down the street,’” Matthew Meers said.
The smoke was seen for miles, and the flames were a front row view for everyone in town.
“I can’t explain it. It’s just heartbreaking,” Trevizo said. “We’ll be back tomorrow and see what happens.”
Witnesses tell us they saw a power line that may be to blame, but the official cause of that fire is still under investigation.
