A cyclist traveling cross country for a good cause was killed by a distracted driver in far western Oklahoma, early Thursday morning.

Patrick Wanninkhof, 25, and Bridget Anderson, 22, were riding for “Bike and Build”, a group that organizes cross-country bicycle trips to benefit and raise awareness for affordable housing in the US.

Wanninkhof and Anderson were traveling westbound on State Highway 152 in rural Washita County when at around 8:05 a.m. the two were struck from behind by a 4-door Chevy sedan driven by 34-year-old Sarah Morris of Cordell, Okla.

Wanninkhof was pronounced dead at the scene. Anderson was flown by medical helicopter to OU Medical Center where she is listed in stable condition with a leg injury.

According to the report, Morris told police she was distracted looking at her phone when the crash occurred.

It is unclear when or if Morris will face any charges.
