There were some scary moments for the family of a metro toddler over the weekend. The little girl was found face down in the water at an Edmond water park. The family credits a nurse for saving her life.
The nurse wished to remain anonymous, but over the phone told News 9 it was “by God's grace” she was in the right place at the right time.
Call it a mother's intuition. On Saturday, Sophie's mother says she had a bad feeling while her daughter swam with family at Pelican Bay.
“It breaks my heart to think about it,” said Rhonda Robison.
That afternoon, a lifeguard was forced to jump in and save the toddler after finding her unresponsive and face down in the water.
“I just falled [sic] in the water,” said Sophie.
“I really don't know much. Like, I’ve got like several parts of several different stories that really don't click together,” Rhonda said.
Just as Sophie was pulled from the water, a nurse who was at the pool with her kids jumped in on the rescue and began chest compressions until first responders arrived. Seconds later Sophie began crying. The nurse tells News 9 it was music to her ears.
“I am so happy she was there and I wish that I could see her and give her a really big hug and tell her thank you,” said Rhonda.
Sophie now wants to take swimming lesson so next time she'll know what to do. As for her mother, Saturday's near-drowning was an eye opener of just how quickly and easily drownings can happen.
“They’re fast. They are sneaky. You see them. You hear them. Boom, they’re gone,” Rhonda said.
Pelican Bay says on Saturday its emergency action plan worked because the lifeguard followed training protocol by allowing a more qualified person to step in and help.
