After a controversial decision to change the "Redskins" mascot at Capitol Hill High School six months ago, the school announced its new mascot Friday afternoon.
Next school year, the students will be representing as the "Red Wolves".
Last month, the school announced the final mascot names were down to the "Red Wolves" or the “Guardians” after much debate. “Red Wolves” beat out “Guardians” by 30 votes; more than 438 students participated in a blind vote coordinated and facilitated by McGladrey LLP.

The Oklahoma City school board voted unanimously to change the school's former mascot, the “Redskins” because it was found offensive to Native American culture. The term “Redskins” has also been deemed offensive by ChangetheMascot.org, a national movement that focuses on schools and programs that use the "R-Word” to change their name. The most notable example is the NFL's Washington Redskins.
