According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), 62-year-old Dwight Handley Jr. of Belle Plaine, Kan. died at the scene due to massive injuries. Handley was the driver of a freightliner.

The other involved vehicle was a 2007 Peterbilt driven by 31-year-old Jesse Brownlee, of Wellington, Kan. Brownlee was not injured, according to OHP.

A pedestrian tried to help the driver of the freightliner after the crash, but the vehicle exploded and flying debris hit the pedestrian.

OHP said Brownlee, the Peterbilt driver, was parked on the shoulder and the outside lane of NB Interstate 35 when Handley, the freightliner driver was in the NB lane of I-35 and hit the Peterbilt on the driver side rear. The freightliner caught fire, which caused the cargo tank to explode, OHP said.
