Police in Cushing are warning residents about a telephone scam in which the caller claims to be working for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Cushing Police were contacted by a resident last Friday, who was afraid they might be getting scammed. The resident told police a man who said his name was “John Knight” contacted them and told them they had an arrest warrant issued for an unaddressed tax issue.
The resident said the scammer knew their name, date of birth and tax preparers information. They also said the caller spoke with a Middle Eastern accent.
“As with any scam, the key is to not provide the caller with any personal information. I commend the actions of our citizen to limit this information” said Cushing Police Chief Tully Folden.
Investigators say the phone number the scammer called from, (571) 210-5961, is listed on numerous websites as a scam phone number.
If you think you may have been scammed or if you've been called by this number, you're asked to the Cushing Police Department at (918) 225-1212.
