An Oklahoma City neighborhood that used to be known as a 'go-to' place for drugs and prostitution is now known for something completely different. The area near SW 5th Street and Shartel Avenue is a place where new families have recently moved in.
The neighborhood spent decades in urban blight, until residents began partnering with members of the Oklahoma City Police Department's Southwest Division. Police said repeated raids over the years drove drug dealers, pimps and prostitutes out.
Katie Floyd and her husband Matt and their two young children moved into a home that used to belong to a suspected drug kingpin a few years ago. “It brings light to darkness,” she said. “It's been incredible to see what God's been doing. We haven't been doing anything, just living together and loving our neighbor.”
