Mustang Walmart Angers Veterans By Removing "Wall of Honor"

The Walmart in Mustang has decided to remove its Wall of Honor, which recognizes local veterans.

The tribute, showing the faces of past and current services members, has been replaced with a high school athlete of the week display.

“It's like a slap in the face,” said Mustang Walmart employee and Oklahoma National Guard member Spero Karayianis.

Karayianis said he feels blindsided by the move and customers News 9 spoke with feel it's the wrong thing to do.

“Being a retire veteran myself, I don't agree with it,” said Walmart shopper Ernest Renard.

“I think they should have left the veterans display up,” added shopper Cathy Gillock.

Walmart managers would not speak with News 9 on camera, but did say the store wanted a separate display for it's “Athlete of the Month.”

“It's like a disgrace, like they didn't want us there in the first place,” said Karayianis, whose picture was on the display.

But why Walmart couldn't sacrifice the space for those who sacrificed for country was troubling for the guard member and Walmart employee.

“They could put it up on the other side or next to it, the wall is big enough,” added Karayianis.

Walmart said they'll put the “Wall of Honor” back up after the current school year, maybe in June.
