Edmond Doctor, 59, Joins The National Guard

After more than 30 years of practicing medicine, an Edmond doctor in his late fifties has enlisted in the Oklahoma Army National Guard.

Dr. Brian Levy said he made the decision after feeling inspired by his soldier son.

Chris Levy is a member of the Oklahoma Army National Guard and served in Afghanistan in 2012.

"We worried and prayed," Dr. Levy said about his son's deployment.

At church, after his son's safe return from war, Dr. Levy decided to go through the process of enlisting.

"I don't even remember what the sermon was about, but that's when it came to me," Dr. Levy said.

"I can be a father figure to them and provide medical care," Dr. Levy, who has zero military experience, said.

Dr. Levy officially became a member of the Oklahoma Army National Guard at the age of 59.

The Oklahoma National Guard told News 9, it believes Dr. Levy is one of, if not, the oldest person to ever enlist for the first time.

The Guard made an acception for Dr. Levy to join, despite his age, due to his medical background.

Dr. Levy begins training at Camp Gruber in a couple of weeks.

"We all get the call to duty at different times," Chris Levy said.
