Hundreds of guns, knives and other weapons are confiscated from Oklahoma schools every year.
We found most schools take proactive steps to prevent a tragedy. Putnam City School District has its own police department. Officers patrol the schools' halls, making sure everyone's where they're supposed to be and that there are not any issues.
"Being a presence is an important part of what we do," Officer Andrew Zamudio said.
The officers' job continues when kids are in class.
"We're looking for security concerns," Officer Zamudio said. "Sometimes ceiling tiles will be moved where weapons can be hidden. Doors will be ajar."
The strict security measures begin before anyone steps foot in the school with several layers of protection to keep non-students out. They're also protecting kids from classmates who may have wrong intentions. Knives, brass knuckles and BB guns are just a handful of the types of weapons Putnam City Police seize on campuses, luckily, before any damage is done.
Chief Mark Stout said in most cases,"... confiscated by people talking about someone else having something. This is all through communications and those relationship we build with our students."
Chief Stout said those relationships are key. "They feel comfortable going to the officer and saying, 'Hey, such in such is happening' or 'we know that Johnny might have something today."
"When weapons are brought to school, obviously someone's made a wrong decision," Chief Stout said. "When that happens, a lot of things go into play. The officers are involved, the administrators are involved, other school teachers. From that, we resolve the situation in a safe and secure manner."
