According to CBS News, actor and director Philip Seymour Hoffman died Sunday at the age of 46.

Hoffman was found dead in his apartment with a syringe in his arm, according to reports. The cause of death is believed to be a drug overdose but no official report has been made.

The actor struggled with a substance abuse past but said he had been clean for 23 years until he relapsed in 2012.

The actor played the character Dustin Davis in the 1996 film Twister, with parts based and filmed in Oklahoma. Hoffman was an Academy Award winner and a three-time Tony Award nominee.

There also was an envelope nearby that is believed to have contained heroin, according to the New York Times.
