Barons Crushed On The Road At Charlotte

The Charlotte Checkers improved to 6-0 against the Oklahoma City Barons this season with a 9-3 win on Friday at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C., in the second of a two-game series.

The nine goals are the most scored against the Barons in their 3 ½ seasons in the AHL, eclipsing the old mark of set in an 8-2 loss at Milwaukee on Jan. 25, 2013. Pending later games around the AHL on Friday, the Checkers also matched the Texas Stars for the most goals scored by a team in an AHL contest this season.

The Checkers, 4-0 winners over the Barons on Thursday, have won four straight, seven of eight and 13 of their last 18 to up their record to 21-19-0-1. The Barons have dropped two straight and fall to 16-22-1-5.

Zach Boychuk scored three goals, two of them on the power play, as the Checkers scored on their first five power plays of the game and went 5-for-7 on the night. Chris Terry added four assists. Ryan Murphy, just assigned by the Carolina Hurricanes, chipped in three assists.

The game was tied 1-1 after one, with Aaron Palushaj and the Barons' C.J. Stretch trading goals 1:06 apart.

The Checkers tallied the first three goals of the second before Tyler Pitlick made the score 4-2 after two with a power play goal at 19:40 on a rebound off the post.

Charlotte matched the Barons' record for most goals scored by an opponent in a period with a five-goal third to break it open. Roman Horak added the final Barons' goal to make the score 8-3 at 14:52 of the third before Rasmus Rissanen completed the scoring at 15:52.

The Checkers out-shot the Barons 47-29, matching the Barons' mark for most shots allowed in a game and setting the record for most shots in a non-overtime contest.

The Barons were also assessed 76 minutes in penalties, a club record, and the combined 124 minutes were a Barons record for both teams in a game.

Chet Pickard (1-2-0) stopped 38 shots for the loss. John Muse (26 saves) won his fourth straight start and improved to 16-8-0 on the season.

The Barons return to action against the Toronto Marlies on Thursday at 7 pm CST at the Cox Convention Center.
