Moore Public Schools says the Jewish Federation of Greater Oklahoma City has cut a check for nearly $1 million, marking the largest single donation yet for the district's tornado relief funds.

Money is being spent and progress is being made, especially at the site of Plaza Towers Elementary where exterior walls are already in place.

"As of 1 p.m. today, we have about $3 million in donations," school district spokesman Jimi Fleming said.

As of 6 p.m. Thursday, that number is expected to grow to roughly $4 million thanks to the support of the Jewish Federation of Greater Oklahoma City. Large and small amounts have been sent in the past eight months.

About $1.7 million has been donated for the district in general. The rest has been earmarked for specific purposes at the requests of donors, according to Fleming.

Plaza Towers and Briarwood elementary schools are still scheduled to be complete in Aug. 2014. Also on the horizon is a permanent memorial for the seven students who lost their lives at Plaza Towers.

District officials say they are working with parents on a plan to replace the crosses and makeshift memorial with a permanent memorial.

"The love and support that we have is just overwhelming," Plaza Towers mom Danni Legg said. "I am very pleased with Moore Public Schools allowing the crosses to stay out here this long so we could have this day."

School officials say the donations are fantastic, but they stress there's still more work to do.

"There was $55 million of damage in the district," said Fleming. "$3 million is great - we could still use some more if anybody is ready to donate."

Moore Public Schools says for every donation, it has sent a hand-written thank you note.
