Freezing Rain Making Roads Slick In Parts Of Oklahoma

Drivers across Oklahoma City and in surrounding areas should prepare themselves for slick roads today. A band of freezing rain is moving from southwest Oklahoma toward the metro.

News 9 Meteorologist Nick Bender says ice threat is increasing for I-44 corridor and Oklahoma City now through Friday evening. This could greatly impact travel and utilities.

A large area of light freezing rain and sleet is moving across southwestern and central Oklahoma. Time of arrival for OKC metro is by noon.

Slick spots will begin to develop on bridges and overpasses, and could possibly begin to accumulate on secondary roadways during the lunch hour. If precipitation rates increase, main roadways may begin to become icy. Tree limbs and power lines will be most susceptible to icing, and when combined with strong north winds scattered utility interruptions will become possible.

The band of light freezing rain and sleet is currently affecting Altus, Lawton and Hobart. The freezing rain is collecting on bridges, overpasses and roads. Drivers are being urged to be very cautious. Several accidents have already been reported.

There's also freezing rain falling in Duncan, Ardmore, Tishimingo and surrounding areas.
