Sooner senior Gabe Ikard has been nominated for the 2013 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, which recognizes a select group of players who have made a commitment to enrich the lives of others while contributing to the greater good of their communities.
More often than not, college football players are remembered for their accomplishments on the field and are rarely recognized for their achievements outside of football.
Ikard's community service includes traveling to Haiti to build and repair damage from the 2010 earthquake, serving on OU's Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership team and participating in various community service projects as a member of President's Leadership Class.
From this year's 151 nominees, a final roster of 22 award recipients (comprised of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA) will be unveiled in September.
Ikard is joined in nomination by Texas' Jackson Jeffcoat, Kansas State's Tyler Lockett, Baylor's Bryce Petty, Iowa State's Kirby Van Der Kamp and West Virginia's Will Clarke.
Past members of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team include Super Bowl champion quarterbacks, Peyton and Eli Manning, ESPN analyst Matt Stinchcomb and Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks Robert Griffin III and Tim Tebow.
